[Short Story - Before the Final Test]
This was the third time that Mamoru was trying this.
The strange blank card could be replicated, he discovered. He had scanned it enough and put together the pieces enough in the system itself to recreate an approximation of the card. Whatever this "White Rider" card was, it could be produced into a usable form by the system itself.
... least, that was the theory. The truth of the matter though was that whatever card this was, it was stubborn. Whenever he got almost done with reproducing the card, it'd fall apart. He wasn't sure what exactly was causing it, either. He'd scour over the data again and again, fixing any issues he could actually find, but again and again, it'd fall apart.
But, this wasn't an entirely useless endeavor. He had learned a few things.
First, that it was definitely an Xyz card.
Second, it seemed to be a Number card-- something he hadn't considered before.
Third, he was able to determine most of it's effect text-- even it's attribute and type, but he still couldn't determine simple things like it's strength or full name without fully reproducing the card. Whatever it was though, it wasn't exactly weak.
The question was, why was this card here? Why did it get into such a scrambled up state? Why was any information about it lingering inside of the card itself, with it being so blank?
He leaned back where he sat, as the system kept trying to build the card up, looking up at the blank card he held. He didn't know why he was spending so much time on this, really. It was somewhat a hassle, to be honest. He could be working on the AI system-- he was ready to move onto the final step in preparation for the last test. He was considering implementing the Real Duelist State for it, to see how it might handle.
But still, his thoughts would wander towards what used to be his deck. This card.
Maybe it's because he knew it was someone else's deck? Apparently an Artifact? And that maybe-- just maybe-- whatever that Artifact did might've affected him and his own Psychic abilities?
Which that in itself was annoying enough. His system was built under the idea that it could be reproduced. If it turned out that he was causing specific effects on the system, either it'll all have been for naught, or he'd have to convince Akaba Reiji that he was worth keeping on as the sole operator.
He hated that idea, though. Maybe it's why he kept focusing on this instead of on his system, or on more necessary things like sleeping or eating. That incident that led him to here. The incident that might be causing this.
... He didn't want to think of the idea that he might be making the holograms real, even without dueling himself. His Psychic abilities before would only manifest in duels that he himself was participating in. But if the circumstances of that changed, then what could he do? Look into getting a Limiter and seeing what the results might be? He hated the idea of wearing the Limiter, though. He'd always been thankful that he had enough of a grip on himself to not need it.
But he didn't want things to go so far that people participating in this might be put into danger. It was bad enough when that Hasegawa kid took very clear advantage of the oddities of the system to do... whatever it was that he did. Dueling that Artifact. Himself? He wasn't sure, that whole duel just made him feel uneasy. Panicky.
Though... he guessed that maybe it was because it was an Artifact... if his own situation was related to that, too. But at the same time, he didn't want to focus on that.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the system error, as the reproduced card dissolved. He gave out a groan. Again, a failure. It got no farther than before, either.
Just what was he missing? There was nothing wrong with the code itself. He should be able to do this. So what was wrong?
... He had a thought, as he glanced at the blank card. He wondered-- would it be able to reproduce the card itself onto it's origin point? Was that the problem? If it was a Number, maybe it needed some special circumstances...
He decided he was tired enough to give this a try, as he put the card into the scanner. Whether it worked or not, he wouldn't know, but at least the physical card might not just dissolve before he could read it.
Once the system got running, he ended up dozing off soon after, only waking up some hours later when the system pung for him. He took a moment to recognize his surroundings, rubbing his head. He really shouldn't do that.
He looked at the screen though, and noticed that the system said that the operation was successful? What? Really? He looked at the scanned card...
... and saw no change.
He picked it up gingerly and looked it over. Definitely no change. But the system declared it a success? He put the card down, looking over the system's log of the process. It definitely considered itself to have been successful... all of the information was in here.
... Strange, though, some of the text still seemed off. "Number 1XX"...?
Well. Even if the card still looked to be unusable, he now had the information in the system itself... Maybe he could go from here to see what exactly this was.
Strange though, that there was no change in the card itself...
